Khazna, majority-owned by Mubadala Investment Company, plans to expand its data centers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi to meet growing regional demand and digitalization. As the UAE’s sole dedicated commercial wholesale data center provider and one of the largest in the Middle East, Khazna aims to deliver industry-leading power supply and cooling services through this expansion.
For over a decade, Mechartes has been a trusted partner in Khazna’s ambitious data center expansions, delivering specialized engineering analysis and design solutions.
Mechartes has associated with various designers to enhance the efficiency of data halls through meticulous HVAC system design and optimization. Utilizing advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) we have carried out various scenarios during the design stage with changes in equipment layout, Failure scenarios, Day one analysis, and Leakage analysis. Mechartes have also been associated in post-construction to check the performance of the design with an increase in loads.
CFD Analyses have also been carried out for the Mechanical and electrical rooms including the generator, DRUPS, LV, and UPS rooms to design the HVAC system and to maintain conditions for the safe operation of the equipment.
We also undertook comprehensive CFD analyses to evaluate the performance of equipment placement within Khazna data centers, specifically assessing the impact of ambient conditions on chillers and generators. With chillers located on the roof and generators on the ground floor, our studies focused on determining whether hot flue gas emissions from generators could affect chiller operation under varying wind directions, speeds, and ambient temperatures.
Following these analyses, we provided detailed recommendations tailored to each project. These recommendations aimed to mitigate any potential adverse effects on chiller performance caused by generator exhaust, ensuring optimal operational efficiency and reliability of the cooling systems.
During the construction phase, Mechartes has provided essential support by conducting piping stress analyses and adhering to ASME B31.3 standards, to safeguard the integrity of chilled water and condenser water networks. By identifying and mitigating potential stress points, we’ve ensured the resilience and longevity of these vital infrastructure components.
Furthermore, our team has also been involved in designing internals for Thermal Energy Storage Tanks (TES) and Buffer tanks across Khazna’s facilities. Integrating advanced process design and structural analysis, compliant with industry standards such as ASHRAE Applications Handbook-2007, AWWA D100, and ASME B 31.1, we’ve optimized these systems to maximize energy efficiency and operational reliability. Validation through CFD analysis has further enhanced our designs, ensuring optimal performance during both charging and discharging cycles.
