The objective is to identify a model scale which allows the best possible and feasible results in terms of transferability to the real scale machine, using CFD simulations.
The CFD simulations have been carried out with a steady-state approach for investigations of enclosure ventilation. The components of gas turbine are designed mainly to represent flow obstacles and do not feature any combustion system or power output. Due to the complex nature of the flow within the enclosure, some physical phenomenon are taken into account like heat transfer, natural convection and possible fuel leakage flows for cases of engine failure.
The results show that a model scale of 1:3 with ISO 21789 and EI 15 represents similarity, construction effort, and cost and the features which the ventilation system is able to accomplish under Re-similarity operating condition These results will then be used to comprehensively validate the test rig model, which shall be used to carry out detailed investigations on the flow structure within the enclosure.
