Location: California, USA
Objective:
The objective of the work is to suggest restraints to limit equipment movement and to keep the equipment captive during an earthquake loading. Seismic restraints are not designed to reduce the forces transmitted to the restrained equipment. Instead, the focus is to properly design and install seismic restraints which have necessary strength to withstand the imposed forces. These calculations also check strength of the equipment flange and attachment location to be able to remain attached to the restraint, however no calculations or design are done to ensure that the equipment will be in working condition during a seismic event.
The calculations are done to accommodate the seismic forces on the structure as per UBC (Uniform Building Code) -1997. Apart from UBC-1997, seismic guidelines from FEMA (Federal Emergency and Management Agency) 412 & 413, BS 5950 are also considered during the design.
