Design the tank internals such that the gravity separation of oil and water can be ensured. The design shall maximize hydrodynamic behavior of flow inside the tank. It is desired that water content in the oil collected at the oil outlet should be less than 10 % by volume.
A discrete method of the Population Balance Model (PBM) is used in the present work to generate a solution. It represents the continuous size distribution as a set of discrete size bins. The advantages of this method are its robust numeric and the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) which is calculated directly contrary to the method of moments.
The simulation shows the average velocity meets the API criterion. The time average water in oil concentration is less than 1.8 % which is less than 10% by volume.
